During adolescence, individuals establish, learn, and develop the habits that will carry on with them into adulthood. This makes adolescence a critical point at which individuals can learn and treat their mental health conditions, but unlike other age groups, young people have comparatively little autonomy over their lives and are reliant on the systems and structures that are currently in place. According to a WHO and UNICEF report, 1 in 7 adolescents—approximately 166 million individuals—live with a mental disorder, but these disorders often end up going undiagnosed and untreated. The lack of existing support for youth mental health shows us that the world is not properly addressing this rapidly expanding need; we need to speak now.
